I totally understand why you’re searching for more information on these very cute creatures — believe me the longer you know them, the cuter they become. In general we know very little about them, so considering them pets kind of goes hand in hand with considering snakes or spiders as pets.
But please do not consider hermit crabs as scary or creepy as you would a spider or a snake. I do not want to offend any spider or snake owners, all I’m saying is that they might be scary for some people. I have a lot of nice things to say about those beautiful hermit crabs though. Starting off of course with their potential to be outstanding and pretty amazing pets!
It is obviously due to know exactly what you’re adopting before you actually adopt it, so I’m going to try and make an explanation, or a description, that will be part layman, but it will have some scientific terms thrown in, but do not worry, I will make sure that they are all clear and understandable to you.
When you walk by a window with your child as you walk along the coast and they go crazy about a hermit crab, what they actually see is a terrestrial hermit crab that belongs to the family of coenobitidae.
The animals I’m talking about are quite distinct in the animal kingdom, and even though they can spend about five months underwater they eventually go back to the shore to do what they need to do to sustain them for a while. What they actually do is taking a dip.
What you need to expect if the owner hermit crab?
As far as food and supplies are concerned you will need less than you may think. The most important thing you need to decide about now is buying more than one crab because they are “happy crabs” and they preferred to be in company.
If you interact with them, you will understand exactly what I mean. Even though they have a word “hermit” in their names, they are very social creatures, and the more you buy, and the more often you have, the better.
You probably know a book called “Cheaper by the dozen”. You might even read it, and even though these crabs are crabs cheaper by the dozen, they are definitely happier by the thousands, and they like to be collected by the dozen.
I actually know a few people that do literally by those little creatures by the dozen, which makes them feel better because it reflects their natural environment, as they are in fact very social.
